Nausea & Vomiting

Some cancer treatments may cause nausea as a side effect. The following helpful guidelines have been useful in counteracting this side effect:

    • Carbonated beverages, such as cola or ginger ale, help curb nausea.
    • Tart foods, such as pickles (dill or sour) and lemons, may help to ease nausea as well as enhance flavor.
    • After periods of sleep or rest, dry crackers or toast eaten before becoming active may curb nausea.
    • Small frequent meals may help to keep something in your stomach.
    • Popsicles, gelatin desserts, and ice cream increase your fluid intake.
    • Your sense of smell is often altered or heightened during treatment. Cold meat plates, sandwiches, fruit plates, cottage cheese, and other cold foods improve nutrition without an overpowering smell that may cause nausea.
    • Cancer treatments can easily alter your sense of taste. What are normally favorite foods may taste different. If a food does not taste "right", try another food.
    • Use anti-nausea medication as directed.
    • If you have nausea or vomiting not controlled by medication call your physician or nurse.
