Cisplatin is a drug used in the treatment of
cancer. It interferes with the multiplication of cancer cells
and slows or stops their growth and spread in the body.
Nausea & vomiting:
Cisplatin may cause severe nausea
and vomiting that can be managed with medications. These medications
may make you sleepy. The nurse will write down a schedule of these
medications you need to take. This schedule may change depending
upon your progress through therapy. Be sure to call the nurse
or doctor if you are unable to keep down fluids after your treatment
because of uncontrollable nausea and vomiting.
Decreased blood counts (Bone
Marrow Depression): Cisplatin can
lower your blood counts, especially the white blood cells, which
guard against infection, and platelets, which prevent bleeding.
Call the nurse or doctor immediately if you have a fever greater
than 101F or if any sudden bleeding occurs. Some side effects
of Cisplatin are related to the dose or amount of drug you receive.
One side effect related to your kidneys can be controlled if you
drink enough fluid before and after your treatment. Drink 8-10
eight ounce glasses of fluid a day.
Other side effects which may occur, depending
upon the dose, include hearing loss, hand or foot numbness, and
mild hair loss. Notify your doctor if you notice these signs.
