Finding Church Records at the LDS

Many of the church vital records for Slovakia are available for rent on microfilm through your local LDS church. The cost is approximately $3.50 per roll for a 4-6 week period. The volunteers at the Family History Centers are generally very helpful but may not be familiar with Slovak resources available through the LDS. They can, however, supply you with the correct CD so you can do the computer search to find the film number for the village you are researching.

If you haven't used this resource before simply ask to view the Family History Library Catalogue that is on CD. From the main screen select FHL Catalogue. The following submenu appears:

    A. Locality Search
    B. Locality Browse
    C. Surname Search
    D. Microfilm/fiche Number Search
    E. Computer Number Search
    F. Introduction

If you select Locality Browse another menu appears:

    A. Town and Parish List
    B. County and non-Canadian Province List
    C. Country, US, State, and Canadian provinces

If you select Town and Parish List a pop-up requester appears and you can enter the name of the village in Slovakia. (It's generally not necessary to fill in the county and country boxes). If the town you are researching had a church and its records were microfilmed the screen will display the town . Select the displayed line then select "Full Display" and you will see the available vital records :

Generally, the records which have been filmed cover the period between the early 1700's to late 1800's or early 1900's. Depending on the size of the town these vital records may be divided into several microfilm rolls. Each roll has a number (e.g. #1792921 from the sample above for the 1892 - 1924 Marriages etc. ) you will need to order the film from the main library in Salt Lake. It may take two to three weeks to receive the film.

If no record appears for the village of your ancestors search the records for the largest neighboring town. Typically a church served several neighboring villages. For this reason it is a good idea to be armed with a small list or map of neighboring towns (use ShtetlSeeker ). The record of the church will often list which smaller villages are included in the microfilm roll.

LDS (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) is known also as the Mormon Church. Many of the churches have librarys, Family History Centers (FHC) for doing genealogical research . You can look in the Yellow Pages and call the local Mormon Church to see if they have an FHC.
