It’s month two with the newest addition to our house, our friendly computer which the wife has nicknamed George.  We have been having a great time visiting with our grandkids on video calls.  That alone has made the challenge of learning how to use it all worthwhile.  Today I want to share with you some of those challenges we came across while planning our spring trip to Florida to visit the #2 daughter and her family.

Our first challenge was to really figure out how to just look stuff up.  It seemed that something as simple as where to type our questions was just about cause to toss our new friend George out the condo window.  We called one of the grandkids and she said to just “Google it Grandpa!”  Well, after about ten minutes of instruction, we finally figured it out.  It turns out all you have to do is to use the mouse to put the cursor in the navigation bar at the top of the screen and type in google.com.  She also let us know there are other web (another word for “internet”) browsers (another word for “search the internet”) that we could use too.  I told her google was good for us, plus it makes the wife and I laugh when we say it : ) (see, I’m getting these smiley faces down too).

Once we got on google.com, we simply typed in the town our daughter lives in, Clearwater, clicked on search, and away we went, surfing the net!  We could not believe all of the information we could find, right there are our fingertips.  We found maps, hotel information, car rental information, a music festival to take to kids to during our visit, and even the history of the town.  In fact, we got so caught up in Wikipedia (the online version of what we used to call an “encyclopedia” back in the “snail mail” days”) that we lost all track of time, ending our surfing at about midnight.  We were exhausted!

The trip is all planned, thanks to George, the grandkid, and google.com.  In the meantime, we plan on taking several “internet trips” around the world all the while just sitting here in our cozy office, just the wife and I.  The world truly is just a click away.
