Kk. It’s FBing time here at the Greystar laptop. Chances are that you have been on Facebook (aka FB), or heard of someone who is on Facebook, or know of someone who knows of someone on Facebook. If you have, then you do not have to copy and paste this as your status J My point is that FB is big. And, it is a great way to keep in touch with people.
Invented by a couple of kids, it was intended for a way for teens, a place where there were no adults, that is, until the adults discovered how fun it was. Kids can usually figure out computer apps pretty easy, but the older crowd, those people over 25, have a hard time with it. Lol! Here are some answers to the top questions the adults I know on FB are always asking me. I figured that if I start teaching these old folks they’ll finally get it and quit asking me. Jk. I like being asked, really. BTW, it may be easier if you log on to FB when learning this stuff.
1. How do I use that “chat” thingy-ma-bob? First off, it’s not a thingy-ma-bob, it’s a chat window. This is an easy one and once you understand it, it will never fool you again, that is, until FB changes how to do it:
- Look at the monitor of your computer
- Look at the lower right corner
- Look for a little symbol that looks like the silhouette of a person. Next to the “person” is a green dot, next to that is the word “Chat,’ and next to that will be parenthesis ( ) with a number in the middle, like (5)
- Click on any one of the above.
- A list will pop up with the profile pictures and names of your FB friends.
- If there is a green dot after their name, then they are also on FB at the same time as you.
- If there is a crescent moon after their name, then they are sleeping (or just away from their computer – lol!)
- To chat with them, click on their name and another text box will open up with their name at the bottom and top of it.
- The cursor is automatically in the place where you type your message, so just start typing.
- Now, the tricky part is to send it . . . you just hit the “Enter” key! Woot! You’ve just sent your first chat.
2. Why does Facebook change all the time? It seems like nothing is ever in the same place. Again, another easy one. You just have to get on it more often. The problem with the older crowd is they just don’t get on FB enough to really get it. So like my dad says, practice makes perfect, right.
3. What’s the difference between Home and Profile? Home has all posts from all of your FB friends. Profile only has posts from you or to you.
4. What’s a post? When you type in something as your “status” and click “share.”
5. What’s up with all this “poking” business? LOL! It’s just fun.
That’s about it for now. Just remember, safety first. Be careful of what you put out there in cyberspace, sharing only information with friends, and even then, be careful of what you post. Next time we will take a look at some obsolete things, like cursive writing and maps.
